Taking care of our bodies is extremely important in order to live a long and healthy life. That means that we must take care of not only the inside health, but also the outside. We may feel fantastic on the inside, but our face and bodies outward appearance can show just how well we really take care of ourselves. Our face is the first thing we see in the mirror each morning and the last thing we see before going to bed. It is also how people recognize us and often it can tell so much about us.
So what is the best way to ensure a youthful healthy look? Well believe it or not the secret can actually be through moisturizing. Keeping our skin, especially on our faces, moisturized properly will help slow the aging process. When you think of all the toxins, UV-rays and poor air quality that we expose ourselves to daily, it’s no wonder our faces show aging signs so quickly.
Moisturizing is one way to help fend off the aging process by softening the texture on our face. Whenever we have dry, crackly, peeling skin it is definitely not nearly as appealing as what we would like. Our face naturally produces moisture, but during the winter months especially, it doesn’t take long for the moisture to dry up leaving our face begging for more. The important thing to understand about moisturizers is that they are not really adding much moisture to the skin, but instead they help keep the moisture that we supply naturally locked in where it is supposed to be.
If you feel that your skin is getting a tight, dry feeling it is probably time to start adding some moisturizer into you daily routine. The best time to moisturize is right after a shower. When you are in the shower your face will absorb lots of moisture from the steam and water. Once patting your face dry with a towel you should put on some facial moisturizer to seal in all that much needed water. Depending on the severity of your dry skin you may want to moisturize in the morning and again in the evening before bed.
When trying to decide on what type of facial moisturizer to use, you will find a broad array of different brands and types. There will be moisturizers for severely dry skin, mildly dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, and some with sunscreen as an added benefit. Some will be lotions and some will be in creams and others will be more like an ointment. Lotions are a little milder and contain more water, where as ointments are usually oil based and offer more protection. However, if you are prone to acne this may not be the right moisturizer for you since you can also clog pores and lock in bacteria. If you find that you are in the sunlight often you may want to find a moisturizer that will give you that added benefit of UV protection.
Just as facial moisturizers come in all brands and types, they also come in all different prices. Be careful to read labels so you know just what you are getting and do not be fooled if the expensive brand is selling their product with the exact same ingredients as the lower priced brand. Also for those that have sensitive skin you will probably want to stay away from moisturizers that are scented with perfumes, since these can cause a reaction of the skin.
Overall, moisturizing is a great way to keep a healthy and youthful look to your face. In the summer months when humidity is high you will most likely be okay without moisturizers since the skin is able to draw in moisture through the humid air, but when the winter creeps up, you should start preparing your face and locking that moisture in before it has a chance to escape!
