Supplements for high blood pressure

Suffering from high blood pressure is serious and dangerous. It is very important to see your doctor if you feel that you may have high blood pressure. For some people, medication may be needed to control high blood pressure although high blood pressure can often be cured through lifestyle changes and natural remedies.

There are several things that one can do to lower their blood pressure. A few lifestyle changes that you can make at home may be the answer you have been looking for. For starters it is important to watch your weight. People who are overweight or live a sedentary life are at a much greater risk of developing high blood pressure. If you are overweight you should work on losing weight through changes in your diet and exercise. Watch your consumption of alcohol and sodium since both are bad for high blood pressure. For those who are smokers, quitting smoking can really help lower your blood pressure as well. Smoking has so many toxins and chemicals that are bad for the heart and smoking robs your body of the oxygen it needs to maintain a healthy heart and arteries. You should also watch your stress levels. Although its easier said than done, high stress levels contribute to high blood pressure therefore finding ways to alleviate stress is very important.

Apart from the lifestyle changes that you can make, there are also a few supplements that may play a role in lowering blood pressure as well. First, make sure you are eating enough foods that contain potassium. Having enough potassium will keep sodium levels from being elevated in the cells. High sodium causes fluid retention and can cause a rise in blood pressure.

One ingredient that you probably already have in your home or consume is garlic. Garlic has shown to reduce high blood pressure in those that consume it regularly. If you do not prefer the taste of garlic you can take it capsule form instead. The recommended dosage may vary depending on the person so be sure if you take garlic in a capsule form that you discuss with your doctor just how much is safe for you. Garlic is a blood thinner therefore it should not be taken by everyone, especially those taking other medications that are for thinning the blood or anyone that deals with a blood disorder.

A few other supplements that can be beneficial in lowering high blood pressure include Coenzyme Q10, Hawthorn, Fish Oil, Folic Acid, Calcium and Magnesium. Coenzyme Q10 taken in doses of 60mg twice a day can reduce blood pressure after a few weeks of use. Hawthorn is an herb that has been used for years to help with several health issues and lowering blood pressure is one of them. Taking 1200mg of hawthorn extract daily can drastically lower blood pressure and there have not been any complications with medications reported thus far.

Fish Oil is another supplement that has shown results when taken by those with high blood pressure. The results may not be as drastic as with some other supplements but there can definitely be some noticeable differences. Folic Acid is a supplement that is extremely healthy and does so many great things for a person’s overall health. By improving the formation of red blood cells it keeps the body strong. Calcium and Magnesium are both good for your body and your well being. Both of these ingredients can be found in foods you eat so getting enough should be easy. If you do not eat foods that are high in calcium or magnesium then taking them in supplemental form may be best. Remember to always consult a doctor before staring any supplemental program.
