Insomnia is an ailment that affects many people. Most people can say that they suffered from insomnia at some time in their lives. Most emotional periods of life that involve death, a sudden job change or even a move can spark insomnia. Any life episode that leads to any sort of worrying about the future could trigger the cycle of insomnia.

The human body is unable to relax when the mind is under such stress and anxiety. Additionally, if there is an episode of premenstrual syndrome, restless leg syndrome, or any other physical issue, insomnia could be triggered. Despite the reasons behind insomnia, some sort of remedy will be recommended by any health professional. No doctor would allow insomnia to go untreated because light symptoms are bound to result in more severe conditions. There are conventional and alternative approaches that can be used to offset the symptoms of insomnia. One string of methods that is growing in popularity involves herbal remedies. Additionally, there are basic life adjustments that can be made to offset insomnia symptoms. All of these are safe and non-addictive methods to induce a restful night’s sleep.

Numerous herbs exist in the plant kingdom to affect nearly for every ailment and sickness known to man. Insomnia also shares a fair amount of herbs that will alleviate disorders successfully with little to no toxic side effects. For example, valerian root is a widely accepted herbal remedy for insomnia. There is a very soothing and calming effect that has tagged this herb as “nature’s Valium.” Some parents even turn to this herb to help treat hyperactive children through a natural method and is known to meet great success.

Additionally, there is an advantage to herbal remedies such as valerian root because the side effects and addictive nature of the remedy is limited or non-existent. Herbal remedies do not result in “hang-overs” like many conventional medications. They are all very safe for daily use and are not habit-forming. Another widely used herb that is commonly used to treat insomnia is chamomile, usually used in teas. Chamomile tea is common to drink at bedtime to relax and prepare for a full night’s sleep. Lavender is another herb that is utilized for similar results. Lavender is also used as an essential oil on pillows, blankets and sheets. Lavender is known to relax the body, just like passionflower and numerous other known herbs.

Conventional medications are useful in life and death circumstances, as well as acute conditions. The world of medicine has made incredible advancements that have helped prolong many lives. Some conventional medicines offer harmful and toxic side effects and that has to be considered in any treatment. Especially when the effects are as severe as liver damage and other severe effects to vital organs.

When the liver’s ability to respond to toxins becomes impaired, severe liver damage occurs. Alternative and herbal remedies provide the safest treatments for insomnia and should always be pursued prior to any conventional medications.

Great article. I would prefer to use a natural method whenever possible, to cure any condition. I’ve had trouble sleeping in the past, but didn’t want to consider taking sleeping pills because I was afraid of developing a dependency. I have a German website about sleeping problems too, so I would like to add a few points.

I agree with Angela that you should not take any medicine if you can avoid it. Most problems come from bad habits, like eating too much or drinking caffeine, as mentioned in the article.

Also people should make sure that they get rid of any light that shines into their room, the darker, the better.
Furthermore it’s advisable to stop watching TV or sitting at the computer about an hour before going to bed. The bright light tells the body that it’s still daytime, so the body stays awake.

A better routine would be to read a book before going to bed. It’s relaxing and therefore is a good preparation for sleep.

If someone German is reading this, here is another article that gives a few good tipps about how to have a better sleep:
