There are two types of herpes virus, genital herpes and oral herpes. Unfortunately neither one is curable at this time but the good news is they are preventable and treatable. The two types of herpes viruses are Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Type 2 (HSV-2). Both of these types of virus can affect either the genitals or the mouth but typically HSV-1 is the virus that causes oral sores whereas the HSV-2 causes the genital sores.
People do not realize just how easy it is to contract the herpes viruses. This is why the virus spreads so quickly and so many people are affected. There are nearly 80 million people in America alone that have a herpes virus and even more have the virus but are not aware. For this reason alone it is extremely important to always practice safe sexual habits. Sexual intercourse is just one way to pass the virus but you can also get the virus through kissing and oral sex as well. Anytime a person comes into contact with a sore from a person with the virus the virus is transmittable. It is important to use condoms in order to prevent the virus from spreading. Get to know your partner. It may be uncomfortable but it is a good idea to be open and honest about having a herpes virus. The virus does not need to interfere with your relationships but if you have the virus, be honest about it. If you are concerned that your partner may have the virus, you should bring it up. It is always better to be sure then to take a risk. Unfortunately today, many teenagers are falling victim to the herpes virus due to having unprotected sex or multiple sexual partners. Practicing safe sex is the key to preventing the virus from spreading.
If you have the virus and are worried about preventing breakouts then there may be a few things you can do. For starters, if you have a breakout, make sure not to touch the sores. Touching the sore then touching another part of the body can cause the virus to affect other parts of the body. Using towels and washcloths are good ways this can happen accidentally. Take caution not to use the same towel on the affected area as you do on the other parts of your body. If you must come into contact with a sore then you should wash your hands immediately afterwards. Make sure the area stays clean and dry. One of the most important things you can do is stay healthy otherwise. Eating a diet that is nutritious, high in vitamins and minerals can really make a difference. Taking good care of yourself will keep your immune system working properly and a good immune system is the key to preventing outbreaks. Herpes virus cause weakened immune systems so you must work extra hard to keep it in good condition. Exercise and rest are also important for maintaining a strong healthy body. Taking daily doses of the amino acid called Lysine can also benefit those with herpes greatly. In order to prevent breakouts, you can take a supplement of 500mg a day. This just may keep your herpes virus in remission. If you do have a breakout, taking higher doses of Lysine can result in speedy recovery. Be sure to discuss with your doctor what the appropriate dosage is for you. Anywhere from 1-6 grams has been reported beneficial when taken in between meals.
If you think you may have or if you do have genital or oral herpes make sure to discuss it with your doctor. It does not have to ruin your life but following some simple guidelines can make a big difference in preventing outbreaks and the spreading of the virus.
