Contrave

Contrave is a fairly new weight loss pill that uses Wellbutrin or Bupropion as well as Naltrexone to aid in weight loss. Originally, it was believed that Contrave worked in the stomach by blocking the appetite. It has been discovered however that the drug actually begins working in the bran to block the signals of hunger from the stomach. The two main ingredients used are medications designed for other specific purposes. Wellbutrin is an antidepressant and Naltrexone is used to curb addictions such as smoking and others.

The drug is currently still being tested and researchers believe that it will provide much needed help for those suffering from obesity. Contrave is now in the third stage of clinical testing and is being examined to determine its efficacy, safety and tolerability in patients. Orexigen Therapeutics is the developer of the drug and is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on developing medications to treat disorders of the central nervous system. Studies are being conducted now to determine the effectiveness of Contrave on metabolic syndrome in patients. Metabolic syndrome includes many risk factors that can increase the risk of obesity as well as diabetes and heart disease. Contrave works unlike other diet aids. Instead of simply suppressing appetite, this medication focuses on the neurological causes of obesity in patients.

Naltrexone, one of the main ingredients in Contrave, has been used for many years in the treatment of opioid addictions as well as alcoholism. The drug blocks opioid receptors in the brain, thus inhibiting the reinforcement of many addictive chemicals. It has also been shown in many studies to alter the taste of certain foods.

Bupropion, better known as Wellbutrin, has been used for treating depression for more than 25 years and has been used as a stop smoking aid since the late 1990s. Clinical studies have also shown it to be effective in increasing the levels of energy in patients and in suppressing appetite. One of the main noted side effects of this drug is weight loss, which fairs well for patients who are suffering from obesity.

Contrave will be available by prescription only because it does contain a combination of very potent medications that may have fairly severe side effects in some patients. The advantages of the drug include its effectiveness in suppressing the appetite, thus helping patients to lose weight. Studies are still being conducted to determine any additional risks or side effects as well as its effectiveness in treating other conditions. Because of the combination of drugs used to develop Contrave, it may have serious adverse reactions when used in conjunction to other medications. You should speak with your doctor about any other medicines that you currently take to determine whether or not this medication will be best for your weight loss needs.

It is important to understand that every patient may react differently to every medication. Contrave may not be the perfect choice for all patients particularly in light of the medications used to develop the drug and the possible side effects and drug interaction risks involved. Contrave was developed to treat clinical obesity, so those simply wanting to drop a few pounds will likely not be able to obtain a prescription. Clinical obesity includes those who have a Body Mass Index or BMI of 40 or more and typically includes those with excess fat around the stomach or abdominal area. If you are not considered clinically obese, meaning that your BMI is under 40, your doctor may not feel that the risks of Contrave are worth the weight that needs to be lost. You will need to speak with your doctor concerning the need for this medication when it becomes available.
