Alopecia areata treatment

Alopecia areata is a condition that causes hair loss. Usually the hair-loss affects the scalp but occasionally it can affect other parts of the body as well. Hair-loss with alopecia is not symmetrical so one side of the scalp may be effected more than the other. The hair tends to fall out rather suddenly and quickly. This condition affects both men and women and is not to be confused with typical male pattern baldness.

Alopecia areata has been linked to an abnormality in a person’s immune system. The immune system begins attacking certain tissues in the body. This is also referred to as a having an autoimmune disease. There are different forms of autoimmune disease, each attack different areas of the body. Alopecia only targets the hair follicles however it has been linked to other autoimmune conditions such as lupus, allergy disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, vitiligo, thyroid disease and ulcerative colitis. Heredity and genes may also play a role in alopecia, since alopecia has been seen in more than one member of a family.

There are actually a few different forms of alopecia. The first is the most common pattern where there are one or more places the hair is lost on the scalp. The second form is called diffuse alopecia which is when there is a general thinning of the hair all over the scalp. The third type of alopecia is actually referred to as alopecia totalis and it causes all the hair to be lossed on the entire scalp. There is a form of alopecia called alopecia universalis and this causes hair loss all over the body. If a male has loss of hair in the beard it is called alopecia areata barbe.

There is currently no cure for alopecia. The body must heal itself and turn off the condition in its on time. In most cases the probability of growing the hair back is fairly high. There are treatments that can be done in order to stimulate new hair growth. In most cases, the patient is likely to notice new hair growth starting between 8-12 weeks.

One of the treatments that may be prescribed is corticosteroids. These are anti-inflammatory drugs that help suppress the immune system. Corticosteroids may be taken as pills or they can be in the form of cream that is rubbed onto the affected area. One of the most effective ways of administering corticosteroids is through injections. They are injected directly into the scalp. By using this method hair typically starts growing back as soon as 4 weeks after treatment. However, the injections are administered every 3-6 weeks until the condition is better. Topical Minoxidil 5% solution is another medicine that may offer benefits in hair growth. It is applied to the scalp twice daily to promote the hair to re-grow. Anthralin can also be used to alter the immune function of the skin. It is a synthetic tar-like substance that is applied for 20-60 minutes then washed off. If left on for too long the substance may cause irritation of the skin. Often these treatments are used in conjunction to achieve the best result.

Alopecia is not harmful to a person’s health although it may affect one’s self esteem. It is important to remember that most cases of alopecia are short lived and will not affect a person throughout his or her lifetime. For those that lose a significant amount of hair, wearing a wig, hat, or scarf may help conceal the hair loss. For some, the alopecia may only affect one small area of the scalp in which a person may be able to hide with a different hairstyle.

Everyone loses hair on a daily basis, however if you start to notice a significant amount of hair loss then it is time to visit your doctor to see if you may have developed alopecia.
