ADHD medication

When a child or an adult is diagnosed with having ADHD they will be given a prescription for ADHD medication. There are various types of medication that people take for ADHD to help them with this disorder. Sometimes a person who has been diagnosed with ADHD may have to try several different medications before they find the right ADHD medication that will work for them.

The first kind of ADHD medication that is usually prescribed for people with this disorder is classified as stimulants. Stimulants can help a person maintain their focus on their activity that needs to be finished and help them maintain self-control. For some people however the medication in the form of a stimulant does not work. In these case the person with ADHD is usualy given an antidepressant next to see if that will bring them relief from their condition. However, ADHD medication in the form of antidepressants is not used until at least two different stimulants have been tried.

Every type of ADHD medication has side effects just as any kind of medication does. If a person who has been diagnosed has other health conditions certain side effects from the ADHD medication may not be tolerable for them. For instance if you are a person with a heart condition you should not take certain medications to treat your ADHD like Dexedrine, Adderall or Concerta. These medications have been known to cause heart attacks in certain people who have heart disease. Some children who take these medications may experience sleep disorders, nervousness and the loss of appetite. In some people ADHD medication can cause them to develop a psychosis, nervous tics and become moody.

ADHD medication of the stimulant type typically will have ethylphenidates and amphetamines in them. ADHD medication that has methylphenidate in it are the most common ones prescribed for people who do well on the stimulant type of AHDH medication. These usually have less side effects for most people. Some common name brands that contain methylphenidate are Ritalin and Focalin. These two are short acting types. Some common medium acting stimulants are Ritalin SR, Metadate ER and Methylin. Long acting stimulants used for ADHD medication include Ritalin LA, Metadate C and Concerta. Another type of stimulant that is tried for people who do not respond to the medications with methylphenidate are the kind that contain amphetamines.
Some of these are Adderall, Dextrostate and Dexedrine.

The ADHD medication that is helping children the most right now is Synaptol. There have been independent lab studies done with Synaptol which have been giving results of it being 99% effective and it also is known to take effect almost immediately.

One type of ADHD medication for children that is giving impressive results with natural ingredients is called Hypinol. When the right medication is found for each person who has this disorder their symptoms can be managed quite well.

Acupuncture is showing great promise as an alternative option to taking ADHD medication. With acupuncture the energy pathways can be aligned and brought back into balance with the body. Counseling and nutritional therapy and behavioral therapies are also other alternatives to taking prescription mediation for ADHD. Neuro feedback is another treatment that can be learned and can help the person who has this disorder to reduce anxiety, depression and sleep problems.

One last alternative to taking ADHD medication is that of diet. People with ADHD are told to cut down on their sugar consumption because it will help calm hyperactivity and control mood swings. Artificial sweeteners can make ADHD worse and should be avoided also. In other words, an ADHD diet would be one that avoids sugars and processed foods as much as possible and one that includes whole, unprocessed and natural foods.
